Turn the times into a plan.
- Book the twilight slot with the add-on "Real twilight shoot" or "Twilight exterior" at checkout, and tell us which side of the house matters most.
- Fix the lights in daylight: replace dead bulbs, match warm color temperatures, test landscape and pool lights.
- Clear the driveway and street of cars and bins before sunset.
- At sunset: every interior light on, blinds open about halfway, TVs off, fireplace on if it's gas.
Which way does the front face? A west-facing front glows at golden hour; an east-facing front is often in shade by evening, which is exactly when twilight pays off. More in the best time of day for exterior photos.

When should a twilight shoot start?
Plan for the photographer to be set up 15 to 20 minutes before sunset. Exteriors with the warmest window glow usually come from just after sunset to around civil dusk, roughly 25 to 35 minutes later in our area.
What is civil dusk?
The moment the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon. Before it, the sky still has color and there's enough light to show the yard and the roofline; after it, the sky goes dark fast.
What is golden hour?
The stretch before sunset when the sun is low (here, below 6 degrees). It gives warm, soft light on a west-facing front and long shadows, good for exteriors and lifestyle shots.
Real twilight or virtual twilight?
A real twilight shoot captures true sky and real lights, best for the hero photo of a home with great landscape lighting or a view. Virtual twilight turns a daytime exterior into a dusk image in editing and must be labeled where the MLS requires it. See our comparison.
Are the times exact?
They're calculated from the sun's position for the place you pick and usually land within a few minutes of published sunset tables. Trees, hills and buildings can hide the sun earlier.
