Drone photography · FAA Part 107 pilots

Drone photography for listings, flown by the rules.

Aerials show what ground photos can't: the size of the lot, the roof, the backyard, the cul-de-sac and what's down the road. Our pilots are FAA Part 107 certified and every address gets an airspace check before we confirm the flight.

When a listing needs aerials.

  • Big or unusual lots. An acre with a tree line and a pond looks like a backyard from the ground. From 200 feet it looks like what it is.
  • Water, golf and open space. If the home backs to a lake, a fairway or a park, the aerial is the hero photo.
  • Location stories. Distance to the commuter lot, the school or the town center is easier to show than to explain.
  • Roofs and outbuildings. A new roof, a detached garage or a pool are selling points buyers want to see.

For a townhome in the middle of a row, drone often adds less. We'll tell you if we think it's not worth it.

Why the DC area is different.

The Washington region has some of the most controlled airspace in the country. Our booking check draws the DC Flight Restricted Zone as a 17.3-mile ring around Reagan National (about 15 nautical miles, the FAA's unit), and inside it every flight needs an FAA and TSA authorization, which our Part 107 pilot files before the shoot. Near Andrews, the pilot files the same kind of authorization. Around Dulles, BWI and Manassas Regional, the pilot gets LAANC authorization first, usually in minutes; near the Quantico base the pilot coordinates with the base before shoot day; and near Stafford Regional we check for NOTAMs. The airspace checker runs the same check on any address, and our Washington, DC and Maryland drone pages explain the authorization process there.

So drone is available everywhere we shoot. Every address is checked when you book, and if it sits in the DC restricted zone we tell you then and ask for a few business days of lead time so the authorization is in hand before shoot day. On the day, the pilot still runs B4UFLY and LAANC before takeoff.

What you get.

Edited aerial stills (6 to 10 with drone stills), shot from several heights and angles, including a straight-down view that shows lot lines when the property calls for it. Aerial video clips run 30 to 60 seconds and come color-graded, ready to drop into a listing film or a reel.

The airspace rings we check.

Before a drone shoot is confirmed, the address goes through the same airspace check our pilots and dispatch use. These are the rings it looks at. Drone is available in every one of them: our FAA Part 107 pilots get the authorization each flight needs, and still check B4UFLY and LAANC on the day of the flight.

Questions, answered.

Are your drone pilots licensed?

Yes. Every KONAH drone pilot holds an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate, and the pilot checks B4UFLY and LAANC again on the day of the flight.

Can you fly in Arlington, Alexandria or DC?

Yes. Those addresses sit inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (the 17.3-mile ring around Reagan National) in our airspace check, so our Part 107 pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization before the flight; book a few business days ahead. We handle the paperwork; you just pick the date.

What about homes near Dulles or Manassas airport?

Yes. Homes inside those rings get a LAANC authorization before the flight, and our Part 107 pilot requests it. For low-altitude real estate work it usually comes back in minutes.

What if it rains on drone day?

Interior photos still happen and still deliver on time. If wind or rain grounds the drone, we reschedule the flight at no cost, or refund the drone part if you'd rather skip it.

How high do you fly?

Most real estate aerials look best between 50 and 200 feet. We stay under the 400-foot limit and any lower ceiling the authorization sets.

When do I get the aerial photos?

Drone stills arrive with the rest of your photos, within 24 hours of the shoot. Drone video clips take 48 to 72 hours.
