Washington, DC · FAA Part 107 drone pilots

Real estate drone photography in Washington, DC.

Every DC listing sits close enough to Reagan National that a drone flight needs specific FAA authorization, so aerials here are never a same-day decision. They are still possible. KONAH's Part 107 pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization for every flight in the District, plans the launch with the owner or the building, and you know the lead time the moment you book.

What the authorization involves.

The FAA's page on flying near the capital (faa.gov) says flying a drone inside the 15-mile inner ring around Reagan National is prohibited without specific FAA authorization, and for commercial operators it lists a TSA/FAA waiver among the requirements. Aviation miles are nautical, so our booking check draws that ring at 17.3 statute miles. Capitol Hill is inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National) in our check, so our pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization before the flight (book a few business days ahead), and so is every other DC neighborhood in the table below.

For you, that means one change to the plan: time. Our Part 107 pilot prepares the request with the exact location, height and time window as soon as your order is in. Our booking rules ask for at least 3 business days, and the agencies set the actual turnaround, so the earlier you book, the better. If the approval isn't back in time, the photos, video and 3D tour happen on schedule and the pilot returns for the aerials once it is.

Planning a launch in the city.

Most DC lots are small, so the launch point takes as much planning as the paperwork. A rowhouse might launch from the rear yard or a roof deck with the owner's OK; a condo needs the building's management or board to approve the roof or a common area; a detached home in Chevy Chase or the Palisades usually has room in the yard. Federal and national park land, from Rock Creek Park to the small triangle parks, has its own rules on launching, so we fly from the listing's own property and photograph the park as the view it is.

We frame on the subject property and keep off neighbors' windows and yards. In dense blocks a quick heads-up to the neighbors before the shoot goes a long way.

What DC aerials are for.

  • Roof decks and views. A deck that looks toward the Capitol or the Washington Monument is the photo buyers remember, and an aerial from just above the roofline shows it in context.
  • Parking and the alley. On a rowhouse block, a straight-down frame shows the rear parking pad, the garage or the alley access that the listing description can only mention.
  • Location. The walk to the Metro, the park at the end of the block or the river a few streets away is easier to show than to explain.
  • Detached homes and larger lots. In upper Northwest, the lot, the tree cover and the roof are what aerials add.

Aerials pair well with a 3D tour for DC condos, where buyers relocating from out of town want to understand the building and the unit before they visit.

Temporary restrictions and the day itself.

On top of the standing rules, Washington gets temporary flight restrictions for events and official movements, sometimes at short notice. The pilot checks B4UFLY and current notices before take-off, along with the wind and the rain. If the weather grounds the drone, the flight is rescheduled at no cost; if a temporary restriction lands on shoot day, the ground shoot goes ahead and we reschedule the flight with you. Our guide to drone rules in DC and Northern Virginia covers the rules in more depth.

Lead times, ring by ring.

These are the rings in our booking check that matter most here, and how much notice each one needs. The same check runs on every address when you book.

Drone questions, DC.

How far ahead should I book drone in DC?

At least 3 business days, and earlier when you can. Georgetown is inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National) in our check, so our pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization before the flight (book a few business days ahead), like the rest of the District, and the agencies set the turnaround.

Can you launch from a rowhouse roof deck?

Often, with the owner's permission and, in a condo, the building's approval. The pilot confirms the launch point while preparing the authorization request.

Is drone more expensive in DC?

No. Drone is priced the same everywhere we shoot: Photography + Drone is $250, and drone stills on any shoot are $50. The authorization paperwork is part of the job.

Can you show a home's view of Rock Creek Park or the river?

Yes, flown from the listing's own property. Park land has its own launch rules, so the park appears as the view it is.

What happens if the approval isn't back by shoot day?

The photos, video and 3D tour go ahead as booked, and the pilot comes back for the aerials once the authorization is in.
