RVA's housing is old and dense near the center. The Fan and the Museum District are long blocks of brick and frame rowhouses with deep front porches, tall ceilings and narrow side yards. Church Hill has some of the oldest homes in the city, many restored with exposed brick and heart-pine floors. Scott's Addition is warehouse and factory space turned into lofts, with new apartment buildings filling the gaps, and Manchester, across the James, mixes converted industrial buildings with new condos that look back at the skyline.

Lofts and condos often want the building's shared spaces shot along with the unit. Twilight suits anything with a skyline view from Manchester, and a walkthrough video helps a buyer who can't visit see how a rowhouse flows from the front parlor to the back kitchen.

Getting around.
Inside the city it's I-195, the Downtown Expressway and surface streets, and parking in the Fan and Church Hill is on the street, so give yourself time to find a spot on the block. Coming from Northern Virginia it's I-95 the whole way, roughly an hour and a half with no traffic and much longer through Fredericksburg on a Friday afternoon.
