In Charles County, La Plata is a county seat with older homes and newer subdivisions, and Indian Head sits on the Potomac beside its naval base. Calvert County's Prince Frederick is the center of a long, rural county, with bay-front homes and cottages at Chesapeake Beach and North Beach and waterfront homes and condos around Solomons. In St. Mary's, Leonardtown is a historic town on Breton Bay, and Lexington Park, next to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, has plenty of townhomes and single-family homes close to the base.

Getting around.
From Woodbridge, the fast way into Charles County is across the Wilson Bridge and down MD 210 or MD 5, or south to King George and over the US 301 bridge. MD 4 is the spine of Calvert, MD 235 runs through Lexington Park, and MD 5 reaches Leonardtown. Long two-lane stretches and the Thomas Johnson Bridge between Solomons and St. Mary's set the pace.
