Winchester is the top of the Shenandoah Valley: a historic downtown built around the Loudoun Street pedestrian mall, Shenandoah University, apple orchards on the hills (the Apple Blossom Festival is the big spring weekend), and newer communities spreading south toward Stephens City and Lake Frederick. It's a long drive for us, so we like to plan Winchester shoots a few days out.

Downtown homes are some of the oldest we photograph: thick walls, deep window sills, small rooms and original floors. The light inside can be low, so we balance every window by hand and shoot detail frames of the hardware, mantels and beams. Buyers who want an old house want to see exactly what they're getting.
Orchards, acreage and mountain views.
Outside the city, the land is the listing. Aerial stills show the acreage, the orchard rows and the ridge line behind the house, and an aerial clip ($100) is the best opening shot a farm listing can have. Fall color and apple-blossom season are both worth timing a shoot for if the seller can wait.
