Virginia · FAA Part 107 drone pilots

Real estate drone photography in Virginia.

Virginia is KONAH's home: our office is in Woodbridge, and our pilots fly listing aerials from Arlington condos to Loudoun farms, Stafford waterfront and Richmond's suburbs. Every address goes through our airspace check when you book, our Part 107 pilot requests whatever that spot needs, and you see the lead time before you pay.

Four kinds of Virginia address.

Our booking check sorts every Virginia address into one of four groups before you pay, so nobody finds out on shoot day.

  • Inside the DC zone. Arlington and Alexandria sit inside the 17.3-mile ring around Reagan National that our check uses for the DC Flight Restricted Zone, and so does much of eastern Fairfax County. Arlington is inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National) in our check, so our pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization before the flight (book a few business days ahead); Fairfax is inside the DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National) in our check, so our pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization before the flight (book a few business days ahead). The pilot files the FAA/TSA authorization, so book at least 3 business days ahead.
  • Near an airport. Around Dulles and Manassas Regional the pilot requests LAANC authorization, which usually comes back in minutes. Manassas is inside the 4-mile Manassas Regional ring in our check, so our pilot gets LAANC authorization before the flight, usually in minutes.
  • Near Marine Corps Base Quantico. Quantico is inside the 4-mile Quantico ring in our check, which is military airspace, so our pilot coordinates with the base before shoot day (book with extra lead time): the pilot coordinates with the base before shoot day, so allow extra lead time.
  • Everywhere else. Most of Prince William, Stafford, Loudoun and the Fredericksburg area is outside the rings we check: Woodbridge clears every ring in our airspace check; Stafford clears every ring in our airspace check; Ashburn clears every ring in our airspace check. The pilot still runs B4UFLY on the day.

Airports our check doesn't model.

Farther out, Virginia has airports our ring check doesn't cover on its own: Richmond International, Charlottesville–Albemarle, Leesburg Executive, Warrenton–Fauquier, Culpeper Regional and Winchester Regional among them. For addresses near any of these, the pilot works from the FAA's current charts and requests LAANC authorization where the airspace asks for it. You don't need to do anything, and drone work stays available.

Where Virginia aerials sell the home.

Waterfront. On the Potomac, the Occoquan, Aquia Creek, Lake Anna and the Northern Neck, the water is the listing, and a drone shows how close it really is. See Stafford, Woodbridge and Colonial Beach and the Northern Neck. Acreage and horse country. In western Loudoun, Fauquier, Culpeper and the Shenandoah Valley, fence lines, barns and pasture only make sense from above; horse farms and estates covers how we shoot them. New communities. Builders in Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford use aerials to show amenities and roads that don't exist on any map yet.

From booking to take-off.

Nothing about the airspace is left to shoot day. When you book, the address runs through our check and your order shows its status in plain words. If it needs paperwork, our Part 107 pilot handles it in the days before: a LAANC request near Dulles or Manassas, coordination with Quantico, or the FAA/TSA authorization inside the DC zone, which takes at least 3 business days. On the morning of the shoot the pilot looks for temporary restrictions one more time. If a waiver is still pending, your photographer shoots the interiors, video and 3D tour on schedule and the pilot returns for the aerials afterwards, so the listing date never waits on the sky.

Lead times, ring by ring.

These are the rings in our booking check that matter most here, and how much notice each one needs. The same check runs on every address when you book.

Maryland places we have checked.

Our airspace check, place by place. Drone is available at every one of them. FAA/TSA authorization filed ahead: Arlington (DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National)), Alexandria (DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National)) and Fairfax (DC Flight Restricted Zone (17.3 miles around Reagan National)). Coordination with the base first: Quantico (4-mile Quantico ring). LAANC authorization first: Manassas (4-mile Manassas Regional ring). Clear of every ring: Reston, Ashburn, Woodbridge, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Warrenton and Winchester. Every address is checked when you book, and the pilot runs B4UFLY and LAANC on the day of every flight.
